Current Focus: Business Ownership
  • Blue Tree Boutique: Since 2005, Cates has owned and operated Blue Tree, an eclectic boutique located on Carnegie Hill / Madison Avenue in Upper East Side, New York City.
  • Product Line: The shop features a curated collection of women’s clothing, jewelry, home goods, fragrances, gifts, and specialty items. Cates personally curates the inventory, describing her retail approach as having “no rules” and constantly evolving.
Acting Status
  • Hollywood Retirement: She stepped back from full-time acting in 1994 to focus on raising her children with her husband, actor Kevin Kline.
  • Occasional Projects: Since retiring, she has made only a few select appearances:
    • Starred in the 2001 film The Anniversary Party as a favor to her close friend and director, Jennifer Jason Leigh.
    • Reprised her role as Kate Beringer via voice acting for the video game Lego Dimensions in 2015.
Cates resides in New York City with Kevin Kline and remains active in supporting her family and her boutique.
